Humility – A Lesson Well Learned
There are moments in life where God teaches or confirms a truth in our life. Some are normal everyday occurrences and some, well, some are more profound. Such was the case this past Sunday morning. It had already been a beautiful morning, from singing and prayer to a little girl hugging a grandma and grandpa sitting beside her family. The Spirit of God was moving amongst us with a liberty that I pray will be there every Sunday morning worship service. Many brothers went up to testify of God’s faithfulness and the lessons He is teaching them as they search the Word. For me the greatest lesson of the morning was yet to come. We enjoyed singing and partaking of The Bread & Wine, remembering again that Jesus shed His blood to make me new, that He bore my sins and freely forgives.
Then we separated the men and ladies to wash one another’s feet. It’s such a blessing to see that men and women are willing to stoop down as an example of humble service. Typically, all born again baptized believers are encouraged to join in, but what unfolded this morning will stay with me for a long time. As we men gathered in the back overflow room, I noticed all at once that Henry & Susan Harder’s son Andrew (a little 6-year-old with Downs Syndrome) sat himself down on one the chairs by a foot washing bowl and pulled off his socks and shoes! There he sat waiting to have his feet washed. Henry headed right over to lift his son off the chair when the thought struck him…Jesus would not turn away the little ones… so down daddy knelt before his son and washed his feet. It was such an example of servant humility that the only thought that came to me were the words of Jesus, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven!”
May the Lord guide each of us as servants in His kingdom to walk humbly with our God. Let us also remember the words of Jesus, “In as much as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren you have done it unto me.”
