A Mother’s Version of the Book of Nehemiah
(A paraphrase of the book of Nehemiah)
By: Lorene Gingrich
Nehemiah- building the walls of Jerusalem
A mother- building the walls of her home
Nehemiah 2:18: …And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
O Lord, like Nehemiah, put in us mothers a heart to fast and pray, and to have a mind to work in building our homes.
Vs 19: When the enemy heard it, they laughed us to scorn and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do?
When the enemy mocks us in our mind, scorns us and tells us, “What do you think you’re doing?”
Vs 20: We will answer, The God of heaven, He will prosper us; therefore, we mothers will arise and
build….We will arise and build up the walls from the least to the greatest, separating our home from the
world. Again, the devil mocks and says, “What does this feeble woman?”
Nehemiah 4:3: Even that which she builds, if a fox goes up, he will break down her stone wall.
Vs 9: Nevertheless, we will make our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against the enemy day and
night. O Lord, You promised in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that Your grace is sufficient for me; Your strength is
made perfect in my weakness.
Vs 18: For the builders, everyone had his sword by his side, and so he builded.
Vs 20: ….Our God shall fight for us.
Nehemiah 6:1-4: The enemy invited Nehemiah out to the plains for a meeting.
Vs 3: And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down…
O Lord, as mothers we, too, are doing a great work. Keep us from being lured away by the devil’s
distractions so we will not be hindered from our great work.
Vs 4: They sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
O Lord, cause us mothers to be strong and of good courage; fearing not nor being dismayed, for the
Lord our God is with us as we build our homes.
